I Wrote a Book About AI and Now Everyone Gives Me Their Opinion (Until they read it)

As the drama unfolds at OpenAI, and even though Sam Altman was reinstated as CEO (so far?), it highlights the fact that no job is safe in the Age of AI.

In researching my latest book, “Will AI Take My Job?”, I came across a myriad of hidden gems about AI. Chief among them are reasons suggesting that AI-based systems are set to evolve in ways that most people haven’t yet dreamt of.

People see the cover of my book and make comments, (having not read it) and their beliefs about AI are not founded in reality.

1. “AI can never take my job because it can’t make decisions.” Wrong. AI systems make decisions all the time. That’s what they are designed to do. They aren’t “writers” or “image makers” they are systems making decisions based on billions or trillions of parameters. This is table-stakes for a modern AI. ChatGPT4, Claude do this all day long.
2. “AI can never take my job, because I do manual labor that requires a lot of human dexterity.” Wrong. Seen a surgery robot? Once connected to an AI the robots can already handle fundamental tasks. Autonomous robots already mow lawns and clean bathrooms and floors.
3. “AI can’t take my job because I work with people.” Wrong. Imagine a world where an AI can have a video-chat with a client and the client is unaware that they are speaking to an AI. That day is not far off. The technology exists now.

The reason I wrote the book is to open people’s eyes to the reality unfolding around us. I want my friends, clients, and you to understand that AI is not just a system that can write an essay or make an interesting image.

The reality is that breakthroughs are happening across industries and the interdisciplinary research around AI is changing the world as we know it.

Educate yourself.

Take the time to combat your assumptions about AI.

Look into what is happening in your industry when it comes to AI research. What are the major players doing? How is it being used for other parts of your workplace, like hiring and HR, accounting and finance, or project management?

Don’t be one of the naysayers who just blurts out that, “AI Can’t Take My Job!” When you actually have no idea if it can or not. Find out.

It’s the only way to really start thinking about how to position yourself to take advantage of AI productivity and to protect yourself from AI layoffs.
